качающийся между

приводимый в движение отчаянием и надеждой:
иллюзией отчаяния
и химерой надежды.
Между хорошо забытым старым Йорком
и городом нестареющей братской любви.
Отталкиваемый Филадельфией,
притягиваемый Нью-Йорком.

притягиваемый Филадельфией.

I'm
a pendulum
hesitating between Philadelphia and New-York,
kept in perpetual motion
by the repulsion exercised by the one,
and attraction exerted by the other,
by the repulsion exercised by the other,
and attraction exerted by the one —
the illusion of the repulsion,
and the chimera of the attraction.
Swinging to and fro
to the rhythm of rickety train carriages
and the squealing accompaniment of worn tires.

I'm
a pendulum bound between the two cities:
the city of lost love
and the city of love not found.
Sickened by the origin,
apprehensive of the destination,
(if, of course, there are such things
as the origin and destination of a pendulum).
Working my way out
of the confines of the amplitude,
nauseated by the very notion of motion,
pumping the seemingly inexhaustible time
from the pool of "possibility" — to the quagmire of "actuality",
from the reservoir of "impossibility" — to the crystal lake
of "non-happening".
Kept swung by the change of the seasons,
vacillation of the moods,
and the circulation of the blood.
